Misfire Generator Systems

MisGen3 system with original Coil Connection Box (CCB)

As its name implies, this box connects to the wires running directly to the ignition coils (primary sides). This configuration works on all engines up to and including 12 cylinders that permit access to the coil primaries. A distinguishing characteristic of this electronic design is that misfires are created without ever interrupting current flow within the ignition coil primary. This has two important consequences:
  • It ensures that misfire creation cannot trip any ignition diagnostic based on measurement of coil primary current, since that is unaffected by the MisGen3 CCB during the coil dwell period.

  • Only one connection is needed between the CCB and each coil primary to create misfire. (The only reason to implement an optional two-wire-per-coil connection to the CCB is to allow it to generate a high-voltage spike (several hundred volts) as a substitute for the primary coil's flyback voltage that is severely clipped during each misfire. This is only needed if the ignition diagnostic detects such spikes.)
